It is definitely worth a try. It sounds like you guys broke up over a misunderstanding; not a big problem. You should explain to him everything that happened. Make sure that YOU explain to him, not your cousin. It seems juvenile for you to have your cousin explain it to him. It will mean so much more if you do it and then you know that you tried your very best to get him back.
