Why does all Toasters have a setting that burns bread pitch black and makes it uneatable?

Probably for things that start out frozen. I'm sure if you put a frozen eggo or waffle in there, turning it to the highest setting would probably make it perfect. I keep my organic bread in the fridge or freezer and have to put it on the highest setting to defrost and toast it.
