How would I avoid blowing a circuit or putting myself at risk?

I rent part of a normal house. Would like to purchase a highly-rated toaster oven that draws about 1800 watts. Best advice I can get says anything plugged into a regular socket should be 1500 watts or less. What say you? GFI adapter plug won't do me much good if it goes off every time I want to make toast. For the relatively brief time I'd use the toaster each time, could I safely unplug the refrigerator and use that receptical for the toaster? Thanks for your input.
