You would think in a church people would be willing to lend a helping hand is it a lack of confidence or what?

The church by me gives out food for harvesters, condiments every three months, and we have a long line. I went last time, and when I saw the line, I asked if I could help, they said sure. So, instead of standing in line..boring..I got to help pack the food for the people, but no one else offered to help, even I recruited one guy from the line to carry a lady's food for her, but he didn't seem overjoyed to do it. What is it with people, are they afraid, like they feel they are not good enough, or what?
